When Adventure Turns Dangerous – and You Keep Going

Sometimes something happens, and immediately your brain goes on high alert: “Wait a minute… what’s going on?” You think about it, share it, or keep it to yourself. You hear all those voices judging, culture, expectations – and then you realize it actually doesn’t matter. Because life is sometimes just extreme. And yes, I don’t want to seem cool or adventurous – I want to show that life can be hard, crazy, infuriating, and at the same time incredibly instructive.

We all face challenges. We all have to make decisions. We’ve all been in situations that could have ended fatally, embarrassingly, or completely insanely. And we were lucky. Sometimes small, sometimes enormous. But this kind of luck can happen to anyone – no matter how we live.

Sometimes the challenges on the road are ordinary – sometimes extreme. Accommodation can be an adventure in itself: owners with quirky rules, rodents, insects like bedbugs or cockroaches that keep you awake at night. I’ve also been in regions where landmines lay hidden in the ground – remnants of conflicts that could still explode if you step on them carelessly. Experiences like these make you realize how unpredictable life can be and that caution is always necessary while traveling.

Episode 1 – Climbing a Hill with a Fear of Heights and a “Personal Trainer”

I discovered a viewpoint on a hill – for me, more like a small mountain. Athletic? Not really. Ambitious? Always. So, on foot. At first flat, pleasant, through the city – sun on my skin, gentle breeze. Then the climb began, and my fear of heights kicked in. Thoughts like: “Maybe go back? Or just let laziness win?” ran through my mind.

Suddenly, a man joined me. He “just happened” to be going up too, had a ‘coffee date’ at the top. And as I’ve often noticed with men who flirt with overweight women: he claimed to be a personal trainer. No, he wasn’t. I knew immediately what he wanted. Still, I let him accompany me – not out of politeness, but because he motivated me and I wanted to test how strong my boundaries really are.

He pushed me forward, and I forgot about laziness and my fear of heights. At the top, he showed me places I would never have reached alone. Then he found a secluded spot on the ruins and asked me to hold his jacket because he needed to “take care of some little boys” for a moment. I knew right away he wanted more. I was furious, threw him the jacket, and walked away.

The descent was tougher than the climb: steep paths, my fear of heights – and behind me, the idiot who kept following. All the endurance I had was needed to make it down safely. Eventually, I lost him – not by speed, I’m fit like a hippo – he probably gave up.

Episode 2 – Village Paths and Persistent Followers

A few kilometers further, sometimes through villages, sometimes along rural paths. A man wanted to give me a ride. I declined and kept walking. Yet he crossed paths with me several times. Panic, racing heart, a thought: “Why is this happening to me now?” And again: lucky. I managed to lose him. We’ve all had moments where we hope everything will turn out fine.

Episode 3 – Wild Camping and Messed-Up Backpacks

While wild camping, I left my large backpack in the tent during day trips. Carrying it everywhere would have been too exhausting. One evening, just before dusk, I returned to find some of my things scattered outside the tent. Someone had rummaged through them.

They didn’t steal anything but had messed everything up. I was annoyed, but mostly relieved nothing was missing. Crazy enough, I found a stranger’s cap – probably accidentally slipped in. I later hung it up in the village so the owner could get it back. A moment mixing irritation, gratitude, and relief.

Extreme Experiences, Luck, and Reflection

Sometimes you face situations you never thought possible. I was incredibly lucky – once even when a friend and I were threatened with weapons. We were pinned down, every small movement could have been fatal. I know my luck isn’t unlimited.

These moments remind me that danger, uncertainty, and luck are universal. Whether living a settled life or nomadically, minimally or comfortably – we all have to deal with risks, make decisions, and assess our own situations. Life gives us challenges and teaches us gratitude, confidence, and courage.

This life is intense, honest, often infuriating, sometimes dangerous – but always full of stories you only believe once you’ve lived them.
