Doing Laundry with a Bucket – Simple, Self-Sufficient, Different

Doing laundry.
Yes, I want to write about that too. Maybe it interests someone — or maybe just that one person who’s currently googling how to wash clothes without a washing machine while living on the road. And let me say this: I never thought I’d reach a point in my life where this would feel totally normal.

Laundry Routine

At first, I tried to use a washing machine whenever I had the chance. And if not, then I used soap. In Egypt, I once received a small pack of laundry detergent as a gift — super practical, takes up almost no space, and fits perfectly in my backpack. In Nigeria, I’ve since bought another little packet. I like it compact and useful.

Nowadays, I often have access to a machine. But more and more, I give myself a little push and just wash by hand. Honestly? If someone had told me that a few years ago, I probably would’ve handed them a thermometer to check for fever. But here I am. Not out of necessity — but because it just fits. Fits this simple kind of life, somewhere between everyday survival and low-key off-grid living.

I usually hang the clothes wherever there’s space — over chairs, between doors, under the open sky. And yes, I even carry a travel clothesline and mini clothespins. I’ve actually used the pins, so I guess I’m well-equipped now.

In Nigeria, almost every bathroom has a big bucket — and a smaller scoop with a handle, called a dipper. It’s used for showering, handwashing, fetching water, and yes, doing laundry. And I have to say: the bucket has become my loyal little helper. Super practical.

Laundry Bucket

My routine is simple: first a quick wash to get the dust out, then let everything soak. Then, one piece at a time — knead, scrub, rinse, hang. I honestly feel like I don’t need more time than I would using a washing machine — at least not with my small amount of clothes. And that’s usually the case.

I don’t want to speak badly of washing machines — quite the opposite: I love them! Truly. I don’t even know what’s going on with me, doing all this by hand on purpose. And still, I’m writing this post because, for now, it just feels like part of life. I’ve been washing my clothes by hand for a while now — with a bucket, detergent, and a bit of patience. But I’m not making promises. Maybe tomorrow I’ll say: “That’s enough.” Maybe I’ll soon be enjoying the soft hum of a real washing machine again. Who knows. But for now — it works just fine.
