Term Explanation: Area Boys
In Lagos – a city full of contrasts – there is a term deeply intertwined with street life: Area Boys.
During a well-accompanied visit, I had the rare opportunity to speak with some of them. That’s why I’d like to explain here – as far as I can – who the Area Boys are, what they’re known for, and what you should know if you ever encounter them.
Who are Area Boys?
Area Boys is a term used to describe informal street groups, mostly made up of young men or teenagers, who organize themselves in certain neighborhoods in Nigeria – especially in Lagos. They often appear in groups, control certain streets, markets, or junctions, and are known for their demanding and sometimes aggressive behavior.
👋 Thanks for being here!
This blog shows what others often leave out – honest, raw, from a different angle. If you value these unusual perspectives, your support helps me keep writing. Whether it’s once or regularly – every small gesture means a lot.

Many of them live in deep poverty, without stable prospects. Some take drugs to escape reality. But despite their social background, one thing is clear: Area Boys can be very dangerous.
What are Area Boys known for?
- Extortion (“Give me something” – usually money or valuables)
- Sudden attacks, especially on individuals or tourists
- Pickpocketing or robbery, sometimes organized
- Influencing markets or political gatherings
- In some areas: gang fights or street violence
A random encounter, without local support or protection, can escalate quickly. Often, people lose all valuables – if not worse.
How to behave if you encounter them
- Do not argue or talk back
- Try to stay calm and move away
- Do not display valuables openly
- Never enter high-risk areas alone
- Local guidance is highly recommended
- Be extra cautious after dark
Conclusion
Area Boys are not a myth – they are part of the urban reality in Lagos.
If you stay informed, recognize risks, and respect local structures, you can better protect yourself. But one thing is certain: contact with Area Boys is not harmless. What might seem like harmless street youth at first glance can quickly turn into a serious threat.
