Laundry in Lagos – between Minimalism and Modern Machines

Not long ago, I shared how I usually do my laundry: with a bucket, muscle power, and a good dose of patience. Minimalist style – and a bit old-school. But life on the road always has surprises in store. Just a few days later, I actually found myself in a proper laundromat. In Lagos. With a dryer.

What happened? I had gotten a room with a local family and thought: making a somewhat civilized impression couldn’t hurt – at least in the beginning. Also, my two backpacks looked like they had just survived a sandstorm festival. If I noticed that (and I’m really not the tidy type), then it must’ve been bad.

So I grabbed my clothes, picked up some washing powder, and headed for the nearest laundromat. The lady there was super friendly and asked if I wanted to wash everything together – including colored laundry. I was relieved. Honestly, I’ve never been known for my color-sorting skills. So, everything went into one drum.

And then? A moment of quiet awe: a dryer. No fiddling with clotheslines, no praying for sun and wind – just press a button and later hold clean, dry clothes in your hands. For someone like me, who usually hangs underwear on tent poles, this felt like a little everyday miracle.

In the end, everything was fresh again – even the backpacks. Did it last until I reached the host family? Who knows. Usually, one step outside is all it takes for my clothes to look “adventurous” again. But hey: the intention was there – and the laundromat experience was totally worth it.
